Case Studies

Abbott Laboratories, a $20bn global health care company based outside Chicago, sought to refine its global citizenship strategy to reinforce linkage with its business objectives and drive cross-functional collaboration.

Objectives

Abbott is a broad-based, $20 billion healthcare company with more than 73,000 employees worldwide. Abbott seeks to be a leader in citizenship through stakeholder engagement, implementing a robust citizenship strategy, and reporting on its achievements on a global and local level.

Actions

Corporate Citizenship started working with Abbott in 2007 and developed a deep rooted relationship advising on many aspects of its global citizenship approach. Some of the projects Corporate Citizenship has worked on are:

  • Development of the Global Citizenship strategy after the separation of the proprietary pharmaceutical business.
  • A robust materiality analysis to understand the issues of greatest importance to Abbott’s business and its stakeholders.
  • Reporting on Abbott’s citizenship activity globally and locally (including country reports in China, India, Russia and Vietnam).
  • Providing on-going strategic advice on a range of citizenship issues to support the Global Citizenship team in building strong relations with key internal and external stakeholders.
Outcomes

Abbott has developed a leading-edge citizenship strategy that provides clarity, differentiation and direction to stakeholders. The strategy aligns citizenship to the business’ core purpose as well as defining Abbott’s roles and responsibilities to its stakeholders, based on robust materiality mapping.

Our toolkits and training helped to embed the global strategy across the business, and led to many local Abbott companies to refine their approach to citizenship.

For the past three years Abbott has been sector leader in the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).
