The Road of No Return

Even in the days of Covid-19, large companies in Chile and around the world continue to participate increasingly in the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index. Standard & Poor’s, the U.S. rating agency that manages the index, reported that for the 14th consecutive year, they will have an increase in active participation, surpassing the milestone of 1,245 participating companies globally, the record set in 2019. It also highlights four countries; Thailand, Colombia, Italy and Spain, which this year will have more than 80% of their companies participating. In our country, there are 66 Chilean companies invited, and most of them are participating this year.

This is a clear indicator that the omen that large companies would move away from the path of sustainability in this pandemic will not become real. The world’s large companies have understood that sustainability is a path of no return, and that long-term results will be largely defined by the management of companies’ non-financial assets.

The longed-for post-Covid-19 recovery will come hand in hand with fierce competition for capital, which will be allocated even more acutely to companies and projects that demonstrate their resilience and adaptation to crises and responsible and comprehensive management in the face of a globalized world full of risks.
