TAX: What a difference 24 years make

Yesterday’s FT quotes James Henderson.

James is managing director of our sister agency Pelham Bell Pottinger. In an article entitled Companies assess the reputational risks of tax planning James says: “The mood has changed. People expect companies to pay their tax like any other citizen”. Spot on!

How times have changed.

At the 1988 Republican Convention George Herbert Walker Bush unveiled his zinger: “Read my lips: no new taxes”. It caught the spirit of the times.

To catch the spirit of the times he would now have to say: “Read my lips: pay your taxes”.

Companies take note.
