Remploy: When the government fails, it is time to step up

We need a sustainable solution for Remploy.

The government wants to close Remploy factories. Yes, it is making big losses. £68 million a year, to be precise. But the DWP, and some disability organisations, say it is not just about that:

“Remploy factories can lead to institutionalisation and isolation of disabled people.”

In some senses, yes.

But what about those who will never feel ready to enter mainstream employment, like Paul Effeny? He was the victim of bullying in a normal firm. He has been a Remploy employee for 20 years. In a nurturing environment, he has gained qualifications and independence. He says he wants to work instead of living on the dole.

Admirable.

Remploy’s mission is to transform the lives of those with disabilities through sustainable employment. Sadly, the service itself is not sustainable.

Maybe the government will think of something, but I wouldn’t count my chickens.

So who will step up?

A project for social enterprises? Yes.

A task for corporates? Most definitely.
