Food waste: I’ve never seen a straight banana

Jan 10, 2013 | Blogs

Back in January 1927 Fred Douglas sang that he’d never seen a straight banana.

He’s not the only one.

The supermarkets of developed countries have only perfectly displayed fruits on display. The misshapes aren’t allowed in. If Tesco, Asda and all the rest applied the same policy to their customers I’d never get into a supermarket myself!

The result is waste.

Not just waste of food when each town in the UK has a charity food bank, but a wasted water and GHG emissions. Mis-shapen  fruit and veg consume water and carbon but to no useful purpose.

Isn’t it time our supermarket giants addressed this issue?
