MATERIALITY BLOG 1: THOMAS HARDY AND THE FTSE100

Jan 5, 2015 | Blogs

How to use a New Year’s Eve afternoon?

That was my challenge.

Thomas Hardy solved the challenge by writing The Darkling Thrush.  I solved it by looking into materiality and the top 100 British companies.

Hardy was surprised and inspired by the thrush.  I was surprised (and a little depressed) by the FTSE100.

I sampled 35 of the FTSE100.  Of the 35 companies sampled, only 57% gave a description of how they determined what was material to their sustainability.

Materiality is now so in vogue that was something of a shock.  It was like being at a dinner party and finding that 57% of guests preferred conversation to looking at their i-phones.

That was not the end of the matter.

I learnt from what I found.  I will be sharing the learnings in future blogs.

It won’t be as uplifting as The Darkling Thrush, but it will be useful.
