MATERIALITY 2: Was Ella Fitzgerald right?

Jan 9, 2015 | Blogs

Old Ella Fitzgerald was clear: ‘Tain’t What You Do (It’s The Way That You Do It).

Do the FTSE100 companies agree?

It’s hard to tell.

Less than three-fifths of the companies sampled describe the process they used to decide what was really important.

What word best characterises their descriptions of how they did it?

Opaque.

Yes. That’s the right word: opaque.

The processes cited were:

  • 55% regular, on-going engagement
  • Second-equal on 40%: corporate risk processes and independent experts of various kinds
  • Weighing in at 30%: benchmarking and ‘research’
  • Opinion surveys trailed in last on 20%

Make of that what you will.

I’ll tell you what I make of it in following blogs…
